Sports Trivia Championship Official Rules

Individuals and teams are allowed to be participants in the contest.  The deadline for registration and payment of fees is midnight January 14, 2011 for all participants, individual and team.

Teams must have at least 2 but no more than 4 individuals.  Teams must have a team name, and a team captain.  All team members must be individually registered to compete and must be registered by midnight,
January 14, 2011. Team members who are not so registered by the deadline will be disqualified. One team member can pay the entire cost of registering all members of the team, but all names, and addresses of team members must be provided to Jim Sheppard by January 14, 2011.

To enter, go to www.cukiwanisevents.org.  Click on the “Pay Now” button on the right side of the page to pay through your Pay Pal account or via credit card.  To pay by check or cash go to www.cukiwanisevents.org and click on the "Pay by Check" tab at the top of the page and follow the instructions on how to pay by check.  All entrants must submit their name, address, phone and email address.

Registration fees are $25 per person, regardless of whether the participant is entering individually or as a member of a team.  For example, an individual participant would pay $25 to enter.  A team of 4 participants would pay $100 to enter.  All fees must be paid either through the website using Pay Pal or a credit card; or by check (payable to Kiwanis Club of Champaign-Urbana) or cash to Jim Sheppard at 1902 Ridge Park Dr., Urbana, IL 61802.  All registration fees must be received by Jim Sheppard by
January 14, 2011.  Fees paid after that time will be refused and will disqualify the participant.  There will be NO REFUNDS of registration fees for any reason.

A person can enter only once.  A participant cannot compete both individually and on a team.

There are no age requirements for participants.  NO SUBSTITUTES for registered participants, including team members.

The doors to the event will be open to participants and spectators at 1pm on
January 30, 2011.  All participants must be checked-in and seated by 1:50pm.  The trivia contest will begin promptly at 2pm.  Participants who are not prepared to begin at 2pm will be disqualified.

During the contest, no participant may confer with any other person or consult any reference material.  The only exception to this rule will be the consultation among team members at the team table during the course of the contest.  Anyone or any team that violates this rule will be disqualified.

All participants will be required to turn off their cell phones or other electronic devices before the contest begins and to leave them off during the course of the contest; with the exception of official contest breaks.  The ringing of a cell phone or the use of any electronic device during the contest will disqualify the participant.

The contest will consist of 10 rounds of ten multiple choice questions for a total of 100 questions.  The ten categories of questions are:

    • Illini Men's Basketball
    • St. Louis Cardinals
    • National Football League
    • What's The Number?
    • Illini Football
    • Super Bowls
    • Chicago Cubs
    • NCAA Men's Basketball
    • Major League Baseball
    • Chicago Bears

At the beginning of each round, the questions will be passed out to the participants.  No one may look at the questions before time to begin is called.  When time is called to begin the contest, the participants will have 5 minutes to answer all of the questions in that round.  When the end time is called all questionnaires must be turned over and given to volunteers who are picking up the questionnaires.  Anyone who answers questions before or after time is called will be disqualified from the entire round.

After the 5th round there will be a break of at least 15 minutes, a “half-time” break, before the remaining rounds begin.

If after 10 rounds there remains a tie, the judges will conduct additional rounds until there is a winner.  Additional rounds may consist of 10 multiple choice questions or they may be a single question requiring a written answer, in the discretion of the judges.

All participants must do nothing that will disturb other participants during the contest.  This would include but not be limited to the sharing of answers, conversation between participants outside of a team table, loud talking, team noise, unruly behavior, or anything else the judges determine to be disruptive.  Anything disruptive can be a disqualifying event.

The single winner will receive a $1000 prize in the form of a check at the conclusion of the contest on January 31, 2010.  If a team wins, a single check will be given to the captain of the team.  Taxes applicable to the prizes are the sole responsibility of the winner.  Participants must be present to win.

By entering the contest, participants release the C-U Kiwanis Club and any of its members, the sponsors of the contest, and all other participants or spectators at the contest from any responsibility or liability regarding the prize.  Further, all participants authorize the publication and/or broadcast of their name and photograph for promotional purposes, without additional consent.

The C-U Kiwanis Club and all participating sponsors of the contest, assume no responsibility for the prize after it is awarded to the winner, and expressly disclaim any liability with respect to the use, ownership, and operation of any prizes awarded.

Decisions of the judges on all matters, including, but not limited to, the verification of an answer, the clarification of a question, the determination of a winner, the disqualification of participants, the interpretation or modification of these rules, or the creation of further rules, are final and binding on all participants.  Interpretation of rules or creation of further rules can have retroactive effect.  The judges are those who are appointed judges by Jim Sheppard.

Anyone who has helped develop any questions or answers for the contest, and their immediate family members, are not eligible to participate.  For purposes of this contest, "immediate family" is anyone residing in the same household.  In addition, any volunteers helping run the contest on January 31, 2010 are also ineligible to participate.

Email your questions to Jim Sheppard.
